My favorite radio station here in France is “Nostalgi,” which plays really old, pleasant French songs. It always puts me in a good mood.
My least favorite stations, on the other hand, are ones that play “the” music.
You know what kind I’m talking about. My friend and I havedubbed it “Eurotrash techno,” but you can call it whatever you want – it involves long sequences of pounding bass, repetitive sythasizer music and, most importantly, lame lyrics spoken by an echoing voice.
The most annoying aspect to these songs is that they trick me every time.
When I first hear them start, I actually think that I might be hearing some sort of slow, melancholy song with thought-provoking lyrics. And then… bam! I’m wrong.
For example, a song might start off slow with some man speaking softly to music: “When you don’t know where to turn, when you’ve lost yourself in emotion…”
And then…
“Get your ASS on the dance floor!” Boom boom boom, the music speeds up and the party gets started.
On a long drive back from a village today with D., I wrote down my favorite verses from two such songs. They are, indeed, very thought-provoking.
“ Here’s my key,
Philosophy…”
And I’m thinking, ‘OK, Sartre, bring it on! ‘But then come the next two lines…
“A freak like me
Just needs infinity!”
Boom Boom Boom Boom.
It turns out this is a song by a British guy, and has been around since 1989. They just keep remixing and releasing it because, apparently, it’s so great, no one can get enough of it.
And, the other…
“When the moment comes
And you start to lose control…
Take a look up at the DJ
Master of your soul!”
Boom Boom Boom Boom…
Thank you, Techno Music Guy, those are indeed words to live by.
This is the best blog post I’ve ever read! I feel off my chair laughing and then when C. asked me what was wrong, I read him the post and couldn’t get through it without cracking up.
I’m with vlibrizzi! I was sitting at my desk and I actually laughed out loud and had to stop myself. So funny! I’m really sorry though. Maybe you should put a call out for all of your friends to send you mix tapes!
